Tree-conscious architecture - property development with respect for tree preservation

Rumbeke-Roeselare 112 trees year: 2021-2024 Architecture: B2AI

A historic park in Rumbeke, but in a residential area, is being redefined as a quality residential site with several residential blocks. A rich tree stock is not only a context, but rather the raison d'être of this project. The aim of the study is to fit the trees into architecture in a quality way (or is it the other way around?). Specifically:

- analysed the current tree stock from a technical and aesthetic point of view
- formulated design proposals to make architecture and environmental design tree-friendly with a view to short-term (during construction) and long-term (ecosystem preservation) conservation. For example, root bridges, adapted ground levels and technical constructions were proposed.

- mitigating measures were proposed to minimise the impact of the construction process (demarcation of protection zones, adapted site methodology, compensation through drainage for trees, etc.)

- follow-up of (compliance with) all tree protection measures.

The process forms an exemplary project in a clear dialogue between client, architect and licensing authority.
